This small Japanese fish comes in countless distinctive colour varieties and has been kept and selectively bred in Japan for generations. However, the growing interest in Medaka across Europe also brings new challenges in terms of professional housing, care and water quality.
High-quality custom solutions by Filtreau Excellent
To meet this growing demand, Filtreau Excellent is collaborating with AquaFarm International on a remarkable project: a large-scale, fully customised installation for housing and caring for Medaka from Japan. In total, Filtreau Excellent is delivering no less than 200 linear metres of custom-built solutions, divided across 48 specially designed units.
This project perfectly demonstrates what Filtreau Excellent stands for. We not only develop and manufacture high-quality filtration systems; our customers can also rely on us for custom-built tanks and complete technical installations.
Depending on the intended application, we manufacture tanks in a wide range of shapes and sizes, including round, square and elongated models. From a single custom-built tank to dozens of interconnected units for a professional breeding facility: the shape, dimensions, pipework, connections and finish are tailored precisely to the purpose of the installation.
We look beyond the tank itself: every design is developed with practical use in mind. This includes optimal water flow, carefully designed drainage, reliable filtration, easy and ergonomic maintenance, and the way different units work together within a single closed system.
The Japanese Medaka is taking Europe by storm
The Medaka (Oryzias latipes), also known as the Japanese rice fish, has a rich history in Japan. Decades of selective breeding have resulted in hundreds of colour varieties and patterns.
While hobbyists have traditionally kept Medaka in smaller bowls or mini ponds, professionally housing and acclimatising large numbers of fish requires a completely different approach. Different breeding lines must be kept strictly separated under consistent, stable water conditions. Factors such as water quality, flow, hygiene, biosecurity and ease of daily operation were therefore central to the design.
Professional Medaka Housing at AquaFarm International
AquaFarm International operates a state-of-the-art facility in Maasland for tropical fish, cold-water fish, fancy goldfish and Japanese koi. The complex covers approximately 6,500 m² and houses thousands of aquariums and hundreds of individually filtered systems. With the growing popularity of Medaka, a specialised department has now been added to the facility.
The Medaka are imported directly from selected top breeders in Japan. Upon arrival in the Netherlands, the fish are carefully housed, cared for, sorted and further raised at AquaFarm. This ensures that the different colour and quality lines remain pure before they make their way through the distribution network to specialist retailers and enthusiasts throughout Europe.
For this specific process, a standard solution simply was not sufficient: the installation had to fit seamlessly within the available space while accommodating the large number of separate groups. This is where the craftsmanship of Filtreau Excellent truly comes into its own.
