Difference Between Pump-Fed and Gravity-Fed Drum Filter Systems

When it comes to selecting the right system for your pond filtration, the setup and operation of drum filters play a crucial role. We distinguish between two variants of drum filters in our range: "PUMP-and-"GRAVITY". Each system has its own advantages and applications, depending on your specific needs and the characteristics of your pond. We will outline the key differences between these two systems, enabling you to make an informed choice.

What are pump-fed and gravity-fed systems?

Pump-fed system

In a pump-fed system a pump is placed in the water, such as in the pond or pool. This pump transports the water to a filter located above the water surface. The water is then passed through the filter and, after purification, pumped back into the pond or pool.

Gravity-fed system

A gravity-fed system works based on gravity. In this system, the filter is placed about 14 cm above the water surface. The water is directed to the filter by gravity. A pump is usually placed after the filter to pump the purified water back into the pond or aquarium.

Gravity-fed system

Pond pump

In a pump-fed system, the pond pump is placed at the bottom of the pond.

In a gravity-fed system, the pond pump is placed outside the pond.

Placement

The drum filter is always installed above the level of the pond water. This makes it easy to connect the filter to existing ponds without major modifications.

The drum filter is installed approximately 14 cm above the pond's water level. This provides a different approach to water filtration.

Water circulation

The dirty water is pumped by the pond pump to the drum filter via a hose. This allows you to optimize water circulation and filtration.

Het vuile vijverwater stroomt eerst door de trommelfilter voordat het bij de vijverpomp komt. Hierdoor wordt het vuil effectief uit het water gefilterd voordat het de pomp bereikt.

Floater

The floater in a pump-fed system is not adjustable; it is factory-set. This means you don't have to worry about adjustments after installation.

In a gravity-fed system, the floater can be adjusted to a deeper setting, which slows down the flushing cycle. This means it takes longer for the filter to clean itself, which can have both advantages and disadvantages depending on your situation.

Advantages

Easy to install: Suitable for existing ponds without major changes.

Flexibility with location: The pump can be placed in the deepest part of the pond, making it easier to adjust the pond layout.

Easy maintenance: The drum filter is easily accessible for cleaning and servicing, which increases operational efficiency.

Natural debris removal: Debris is filtered before reaching the pump, which increases the pump's efficiency and can extend its lifespan.

Improved water quality: The pre-filtration ensures cleaner water entering the pump, which improves the overall water quality.

Reduced pump maintenance: Since debris is already removed by the drum filter, this reduces the frequency of maintenance required for the pump itself.

Suitable for:

  • Smaller or medium-sized ponds.
  • Limited space for filter installation.
  • Simple installation.
  • Large ponds or koi ponds.
  • Situations where efficiency is a high priority.
  • Situaties waar lager energieverbruik gewenst is.
  • Situations where less maintenance is desired.

Which system is best for you?

The choice between a pump-fed and gravity-fed system depends on your specific situation. If you're looking for a simple and flexible installation, a pump-fed system is the best choice. On the other hand, if you value natural filtration and efficient debris management, a gravity-fed system may be the better option.
